Autocar India has reported that Toyota Kirloskar Motor is expanding its Fortuner range upward and downward with mechanically new variants.
The Fortuner range, from this festival season, will start with a 2.5-liter manual variant driving the rear wheels alone. Currently the base Fortuner is a 2WD variant powered by a 3.0-liter diesel engine that produces 171 PS @ 3600 rpm and 34.98 kg-m @ 1400-3400 rpm.
The 2.5-liter engine comes from the Innova, where it is available only with a manual transmission, matched to a 2WD system, and produces 102 PS @ 3,600 rpm and 20.4 kg-m @ 1200-3600 rpm. These outputs are likely to be hiked in the interest of achieving better driving performance on the heavier Fortuner.
As per the report the 2.5L Fortuner will start at a new entry price of 20.82 lakh, a full lakh cheaper than the current base variant.
On the other end of the variant ladder, Toyota would add a new range topper, Autocar further reports. This variant would get the 3.0-liter engine and with it, an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system. Currently the AT variant is available only with 2WD.
The new Toyota Fortuner variants are likely to be launched later in the year, in the run up to the festive season.
