The Audi A3 has once again been spotted testing in Mumbai. However, the spied mule carries a 2.0-liter TDI engine (identified by the badge), reinstating that the widely employed VW Group engine will also serve the A3.
The four-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel engine does duty for a number of vehicles in the VW Group, including the VW Passat, VW Jetta, Audi A4, Audi A6 and Skoda Octavia.
The engine on the Audi A4 makes 143 PS, 177 PS for the A6, 167 hp in the VW Passat and 138 hp for the Jetta. Given that the Audi A3 would be the smallest in size and market segmentation, it's safe to presume that the sedan would not put too much demand on the engine, and the calibration would also seriously take fuel efficiency into account.
Audi India hasn't officially confirmed any engine options for the A3 compact sedan. At the Auto Expo 2014, when the car was showcased in India for the first time, the A3 featured a 1.8-liter TFSI engine. This engine, used by Audi for the A3 in Europe, makes 178 hp. It's likely that the TFSI engine will be offered alongside the diesel, though its sales goals would be conservative.
The A3 compact sedan should give Audi an advantage over its competitors in India, given that the Mercedes CLA is not scheduled to be launched in 2014.
