The next big thing from M&M would be a sub-4meter five-passenger vehicle which will also be powered by a petrol engine and positioned below the Scorpio. Three platforms are currently under development and they will be launched starting 2015, the company's executive director Dr Pawan Goenka has told PTI.

Like the Scorpio and XUV500, Dr Goenka said, the new product will be a mass-market SUV.

The S101 will be positioned below the Scorpio (spyshot of Scorpio facelift seen here) to compete with the Ford EcoSport.

We believe the first of these could be the S101 even though spyshots so far have revealed that Mahindra hasn't finalised on certain body parts. The fact that the rear bumper, taillights and some body panels weren't found on the test mule suggests that engineers were running it more as a powertrain or chassis mule than anything else.

After the S101 would be the S102, which is based on Ssangyong's X100 platform that underpins the Korando C seen here.

The company had already confirmed last year that it is working on a family of petrol engines that are all-new. These three- and four-cylinder engines are grounds up designed and developed by M&M.

The second of the three platforms that Dr Goenka confirmed M&M is working on is likely to to be the S102, based on Ssangyong X100 platform.
