Malaysian automaker Proton is testing its new global small car codenamed P2-30A. The car was recently spied on the Belgium highways by Autoplus reader Safouan.
Earlier we had brought you spyshots of the P2-30A from Genting, Malaysia.
The P2-30A is a five-door small city hatchback which will succeed the Proton Savvy. It is expected to be launched during the first half of 2014 in the Malaysian market. The P2-30A, will get its official name through a contest. The Malay name would also be used on the international market.
The global small car will get a choice of manual and automatic transmissions which will be mated to new generation engines. They are said to be compliant and designed needful of the international markets.
The P2-30A which is similar in size to the Honda Brio is expected to show up in European markets next year, where it will compete with the VW Up!, Citroen C1 and the Hyundai i10 in the entry-level city car segment.
Earlier there were reports of Proton and Lotus joining hands to work on the global small car, where the former would concentrate on mass market products and the latter would come out with the performance oriented variants. However Proton underwent a change of ownership and the joint venture has not been publicized since then.
Proton was also in talks with Mitsubishi to produce the global small car, though no details have been available thereafter.
