IAB Report – All 125 units of the Mercedes S-Class launch edition sold

The 125 unit consignment of the new Mercedes S-Class ‘launch edition’ was sold out even before the car’s launch, Mercedes-Benz India officials told Indian Autos Blog at the launch of the car in New Delhi yesterday.
The ‘launch edition’ is a top-spec petrol variant which employs a 4.7-liter Twin-Turbo V8 engine which produces 453 bhp and 700 Nm of torque. It comes to India via the CBU route but is not the biggest motor to be used on the S-Class, as a V12 variant is being primed for a debut in Detroit next week.
Mercedes have sold 3,500 units of the S Class since sales commenced in India. In 2010, the first locally assembled S Class from its Chakan plant was launched and a cut-price S300 petrol variant followed last year to improve numbers. It was positioned below the S350, S350 CDI and S500 variants.
Mercedes India have not announced local assembly for the 2014 S Class as of date, but sources within the company say that in the next six months, the car will be locally produced leading to new variants and more affordable prices.
The important diesel S-Class would be the S350 BlueTEC variant that uses the familiar 3.0-litre V6 engine to produce 255 bhp and 620 Nm of torque, which will come through the CKD route.
