Built on the all-new MRA (Mercedes Rear wheel drive Architecture) platform, the next generation C Class is testing extensively throughout Europe. Codenamed W205, the new C Class is rumored to be about 80kg lighter than the current model but at the same time featuring a 90mm increase in its wheelbase.
Under the hood, Mercedes will carry over most of the engines while retuning them for added economy. A low CO2 emitting, 1.6-liter Renault-sourced diesel engine (which is used to power the Fluence and the Qashqai in European markets) could also be offered. Transmission options would include a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 7-speed 7G-Tronic automatic and Mercedes' new 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic (which debuted on the E Class last month at the Frankfurt Motor Show).

We expect the new C Class to world premiere at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show which will take place in January next year. The European market launch will take place from March next year. While body-style variations definitely include an estate, a liftback version is also in the works to rival the BMW 3 Series GT.
