Rendering – Hyundai i10-based Sedan looks to dethrone Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze

After taking a quick look at the 2014 Hyundai i10 and the Hyundai Grand i10 that were announced yesterday, our design expert, Shoeb, has rendered the Hyundai i10-based compact sedan that you see here.

Hyundai-i10-sedan

The i10-based sedan would be a sub 4-meter car competing with the likes of the Honda Amaze and the Maruti Swift Dzire. Hyundai India wants to dethrone Maruti Suzuki as the largest car maker and this compact sedan is one of the important models in ensuring just that. The i10-based sedan would be built on the same BA platform that is being used in the Grand i10, which goes on sale on September 3.

Hyundai HB20S
Brazil got the HB20 hatch and this HB20S sedan followed it.

In Brazil, Hyundai launched the HB20S, a sedan derivative of the HB20 hatchback, in early March. The HB20S looks exactly like the HB20, but comes with a boot. From a design standpoint, the HB20S sports an altered rear door design with a quarter glass, a sloping C-Pillar and a stubby boot. These design cues are also found on the Maruti Dzire when it evolved from the Maruti Swift. Shoeb has used these design elements in this rendering of the i10-based sedan as well. Which is what makes us think that this could very well be the Amaze/Dzire competitor Hyundai India has in mind.

Maruti Swift Dzire
i10-based Sedan’s biggest competitor would be the Maruti Dzire.

Hyundai India is expected to launch this i10-based sedan sometime (preferably in the later half) in 2014. The Korean company has the 1.2-liter Kappa2 petrol engine, the 1.1-liter U2 diesel engine (which will have its Indian debut on the Grand i10) and the 1.4-liter CRDi featured on the i20. All these three engine options comply with the Indian small car regulations.

The design of Amaze or Gi10 sedan is so much more cohesive that Dezire which really shows Maruti’s shortcoming in Design department.

Seriously, India’s infatuation with miniscule sedans will be something I’ll never understand.

You will, if you have ever driven in Indian traffic. Huge SUVs and Longer Sedans are no good in Indian traffic.

No, what I don’t get is, if you have the i20, why would want a i10 sedan? Sedans are the least practical body shape in existence. Hatchbacks are compact, easy to use and park. Wagons get extra room for luggage and can be easily converted to carry larger volumes. Sedans get extra room for luggage that you can’t access (because the rear opening is always too narrow) and a rear blind spot for you to crash when you park.
