Indonesia to get their Ford EcoSport from Thailand not India

Posted on: Jul 19, 2013 - 12:15pm IST

The Ford EcoSport has seen a massive 30,000 strong bookings within 17 days of launch. The EcoSport was also launched in Nepal recently (the EcoSport is exported from India into Nepal).

While we earlier reported saying that the EcoSport would also be launched in Indonesia this year, we were unclear as to whether it would be exported from India or not.

We receive an information today that Ford Thailand will commence local production of the EcoSport by the end of this year. The Indonesians will be getting their mini SUV from Thailand and not from India.

Bagus Susanto, Managing Director of PT Ford Motor Indonesia said –

In addition to all-new Fiesta which will be launched simultaneously with IIMS September, other new news is the starting production of All New Ford EcoSport [by] end of this year.

Mr. Bagus mentions that the EcoSport produced in Thailand would cater to a few more ASEAN markets.

Indonesia would also get the 6-speed automatic.

As far as engine options go, it is reported that the 1.5-liter Ti-VCT petrol would be the sole engine available, at least initially. Given the Indonesian market’s love for automatic gearboxes, we can see Ford offering the PowerShift 6-speed dual-clutch automatic as an option.

The new Fiesta and the EcoSport are expected to be shown at the Indonesian International Motor Show which is taking place in September.

I agree with Mr. Rob. Seeing the Dimensions of Ecosport, it cannot be called a ‘Mini’ SUV.

To the writer of this article. Please get your facts right, Eco Sport is essentially a Mid sized/compact SUV not a mini SUV.

Please do some research before writing any article.
    Really shameful!

      Dear Rob,

In India, we call the EcoSport and Quanto and the upcoming Maruti XA-Alpha and Hyundai’s competitor as Mini-SUV’s. As much as the term is overused, we refer to these vehicles that way.

It will sure export from Thailand if the car is produced in Thailand, in order to enjoy the AFTA zero import tax facility.
