Video – The Maserati Ghibli’s diesel sounds unlike any diesel you would have heard

Posted on: Jun 29, 2013 - 12:42pm IST

The Maserati Ghibli is the smallest and most affordable Maserati you can buy. Unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show this year, Maserati has already started taking bookings for the Ghibli and the deliveries are scheduled to commence soon.

One of the highlights of the Ghibli is it’s diesel engine. This is the first time Maserati (or any other supercar maker, Italian or otherwise) has opted for an oil burner to be part of their lineup. As a result, there were many skeptics who doubted a ‘diesel Maserati’. ‘What would it sound like’, was the first question we asked. Maserati said it would sound unlike any other diesel. Here is a video we found on YouTube, uploaded by ‘Motorionline TV’ which plays the exhaust of a diesel Ghibli.

While it is pretty obvious that there is an Active Exhaust system, rendering the sound you hear, we must credit Maserati for making a diesel engine sound pleasing. This 3.0-liter V6 diesel outputting 275bhp and 600Nm of torque does the 0-100km/h run in only 6.3 seconds, while also managing 16.66km/l!

So what is the best diesel engine I’ve ever heard and driven? Undoubtedly, it’s the BMW 640d. When you hear it (and drive it), you’ll think I’m kidding when I say it runs on the cheaper fuel.

      Hi Alishaan,

Maserati’s Indian sales is handled by Shreyans Motors currently and the products are imported. The company has not yet made an announcement for the Ghibli or the new Quattroporte. We expect the Ghibli and new Quattroporte to be announced for India soon. We shall update you as and when we get more information.
