The New Mercedes GL Class has just been launched in India by the tennis star Boris Becker at an introductory price of Rs. 77.5 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) for the 'launch edition' car.
The updated Mercedes GL Class went on sale in the International markets last year and now it is India's turn to get the luxury SUV. Mercedes like to call it as the S Class among the off roaders. The variant alloted for India is the Mercedes GL 350 CDI.
The engine earmarked to propel the Indian spec GL is the 3.0 litre V6 diesel unit which puts out 255 bhp and a torque of 620 Nm which is good enough to haul this mammoth of an SUV. The transmission is a 7G-Tronic Plus automatic. The powertrain improves the fuel efficiency by about 20% compared to the previous model.
The big SUV comes packed upto its brim with equipment. The AIRMATIC adaptable air suspension system is a standard feature. There is also an optional active tilting stabilizer which reduces the body roll around the corner.
The permanent four wheel drive 4MATIC system, the Downhill Speed Regulation DSR and a special program for off-road driving ensures that the off-road enthusiast is happy. In total there are 6 driving programs for on and off road driving.
You also get the Intelligent Light Assist Sytem, Night View Assist Plus (and a 360 degree camera), Active Park Assistant, Collision Prevention Assist, Attention Assist, DISTRONIC Assist, Brake Assist (BAS PLUS) along with PRE-SAFE safety system. If that is not enough, you get 9 airbags.
The SUV has humongous proportions which gives it a commanding road presence. AMG body kits and massive 21" alloy wheels add to the appeal. Only 100 units of the 'Launch Edition' car will be sold after which there could be some slight variations in the equipment and price.
