Spied – What is current generation Opel Corsa doing in Bengaluru?

The previous generation of the Opel Corsa was one of the cars that failed to set its feet firm on the Indian soil and as a result it was soon forgotten.

The Opel brand as a whole performed so poorly that it was ultimately forced to vacate the sub continent. And now a current generation of the Opel Corsa (hatchback) was spotted doing test rounds within the confines of Bengaluru. Our avid reader Mr. Amruth Ganesh sent in these spyshots.

We don’t think Opel is really mulling a re-entry into Indian market but there is a possible explanation for the spotting though. The marque is a subsidiary of GM and GM has a technical center in Bengaluru. It is likely that the test mule belongs to the technical center and the car is a part of global testing operations.

The Opel Corsa’s platform was developed jointly by GM and Fiat during the years the companies were together. The car shares its platform with the Fiat Grande Punto. Another interesting trivia is that the test mule spotted is a two door Ecoflex variant which uses the ubiquitous 1.3 litre MultiJet engine which was also jointly developed by GM and Fiat.

It is to be noted that this is not the first time an Opel test mule was spotted in India. A test mule of Opel Insignia was also spotted testing earlier.

I hope Opel (GM) makes up its mind to reenter India as their product portfolio is great. One good offering from Opel may erase there past history in India. As one of the readers noted here, Opel has some great quality products – not many really know in comparion the great build quality of ealier Opel’s in India (they were as superior as what Skoda/VW is offering now). I mean the plastics, paint finish, over build quality were great and only if they had the Multijet then….I am sure an Opel Corsa with a Multijet fitted will make the difference to sales – but should be aptly supported by great service too, and the low cost of ownerhip figures should speak to themselves. Come on Opel, bring it on, we are waiting for you, the Adams, the Corsas, the Astras, the Zafiras, etc from your stable.

Opel makes very good cars. I see many opel cars here in Germany, they are among the best selling and they look very beautiful. Opel should consider Corsa, Astra, Insignia for India.
I think it is under GM. Isn’t it?
