Mercedes Benz G63 AMG to launch in the third week of February?

When Mercedes first came out with the G Wagen (Geländewagen) in 1979, the mission was to introduce a car that could travel over any terrain. In short, a car to rival the Land Rover's for their true SUV capabilities.

Somewhere down the line, someone from the skunkworks of AMG (the performance tuning arm of Mercedes Benz) must have wondered what it would be like to have a 'bigger' engine underneath the car. Thus in 2006, came the AMG version of the G Class.

Here in India, Mercedes launched the G55 AMG (as an AMG variant only) two years ago. However, the Stuttgart based manufacturer now wants to introduce the better, meaner and faster version of the go-anywhere car - the G63 AMG!

The G63 AMG carries underneath its hood a 5,461cc V8 Twin Turbo which puts out a whopping 537bhp of power and churns out 760Nm of torque. Definitely an upgrade then, from the less powerful 5,439cc that produces a 'low' 493bhp of power and 700Nm of torque.

Being an SUV, the G63 will come with fine off-road technology, just in case those 537 horses don't get you out of that ditch. Features such as Hill hold and hill assist will compliment the 4WD system.

We are told by OnCars.in that Mercedes India may want to launch the G63 AMG on February 22. The reason for this has been cited as it coincides with the release of the latest Die Hard flick - A Good Day To Die Hard. In the movie, actor Bruce Willis gets to thrash 14 Merc's which includes the 2013 G63.

We're expecting the price to be in the range of INR 1.25 crore plus.
