The new year has started rolling but there is still no sign of the Ford EcoSport’s arrival.

The number of EcoSport test mules plying on our roads is always increasing and every spotting gives the prospective customers a hope that the much awaited crossover is inching closer to its launch date which still remains as a closely guarded secret.

We have been bringing our readers the spyshots of EcoSport on a regular basis and we have a set of pictures on this occasion too.

Our enthusiastic reader Mr. Pandian K.R. from Coimbatore has sent us what is probably the first spotting of a silver colored Ford EcoSport mule. The mini SUV was being tested on the outskirts of the city, carrying local trade certificate plates.

There is a twist to the story though, the car was an LHD version and carried a 2.0 litre badge in the tailgate.

The 2.0 litre engine is available in Brazilian EcoSport in the bi-fuel guise (petrol and ethanol) and we don’t expect Ford to launch the 2.0 litre petrol engine here. We reckon that the test mule is a part of their global testing program or it may be testing a component that is being manufactured by an Indian vendor.

The engine options for India will be the 1.0 litre EcoBoost and the 1.5 litre petrol and diesel engines lifted from the Fiesta. The 5-speed manual gearbox will turn the wheels while the dual clutch PowerShift automatic transmission will be available in the top end petrol variant.

Ford India has also announced that it will export EcoSports, but declined to add when, where and how much.

I don’t really understand the hype with the EcoSport. It was shown here at the Australian International Motorshow in October and to me, it’s a hideous, tiny and rather pointless copy of our Ford Territory. And some people are saying that it’s the “biggest launch of 2013″ in India. Why is that? It’s just a Fiesta hatch with an ugly front and tailgate-mounted spare wheel and it doesn’t even offer 4WD. Strange…

      Dear Jake,

Ever heard of the term marketing strategy & customer preferences??
Ecosport has been developed keeping in mind the Indian customers & specifically a particular segment…:)

Jake ! Here in India we owners don’t use our cars for extreme off-roading so 4X4 is not preferred her, especially since it also saps mileage. We are less adventurous, but our roads are closer to off road tracks, thus we need high ground clearance. Also lack of parking spaces in Urban India makes us love these smaller SUVs. We do have large ones here too, but they’re expensive and less practical.

So in a line – We love the EcoSport!
Visit India sometime, you will understand.

Looks like Ford has dropped there plan of launching Eco Sport in India…instead they would just export to LHD countries……

BBye Eco Sport…thanks for making people fool by keeping them wait…for such a long…in that respect Duster is far better it was launched just 7 months after it was showcased :)

Duster was launched as the Dacia Duster, more than a year and a half ago. That is why the Indian launch could be completed pretty fast. But the EcoSport is new to the world, being launched in the Brazil only 4-5 months back.
