Hyundai unveils rival to 1L Ecoboost engine at powertrain conference

Hyundai Motor Company has showcased an array of next generation hi-tech engines at the ’12th Hyundai Motor Group international powertrain conference’ in South Korea.
The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Convergence of Human, Environment and Powertrain.’
Hyundai took the opportunity to present their downsized compact Turbocharged Gasoline Direction Injection (T-GDI) engines and new clean diesel motors.
The T-GDI technology has already been adopted by the firm’s 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol motors and Hyundai has extended the technology to its Kappa 1.2 litre engine to achieve phenomenal power and CO2 figures.
Hyundai unveiled a 1.0 litre TCI three cylinder petrol motor which is aimed at rivaling the Ford EcoBoost. The compact motor breaths via 12 valves which are controlled by DOHC and employs a turbocharger with intercooler and offset crankshaft.
The power and torque output of 1.0 litre TCI stands at an impressive 105 bhp and 137 Nm respectively while having carbon emissions less than a similar sized normally aspirated engine. The aluminum block and usage of plastics for intake manifold and valve cover helped reduce the weight.
Hyundai also showcased a 1.1 litre diesel engine based on the U2 family (used on the Hyundai i20 in the UK) and a 2.0 litre R series diesel. The 1.1 litre diesel is important for India as it’ll be powering the next gen Hyundai i10 which had already started its testing phase in India.
The other powertrains in display were Gamma 1.6 litre T-GDI, Theta 2.0 litre T-GDI, Nu 2.0 litre CVVL and also the Kappa CVT transmission.
