Skoda Rapid variantsNovember 16th will see Skoda India’s entry in the already crowded C market. The Rapid, which is completely developed by the Indian subsidiary for the domestic market, will be Skoda’s answer to Ford Fiesta, Nissan Sunny, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Fiat Linea et all.

Developed on the same platform as the VW Vento, the Rapid will be available in both petrol and diesel variants. Motorbeam has revealed a variant wise feature list of the the Skoda Rapid. The Rapid will be available in 3 variants – Active, Ambition and Elegance.

The base model (Active) will feature 14 inch steel wheels, Front and Rear power windows, rear windscreen defogger, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, power steering, height adjustable front seat belts, front center armrest and an engine immobilizer.

The mid variant (Ambition) will feature all the goodies of the Active plus ABS, front and rear foglamps, central locking, body color mirrors and door handles, driver airbag, height adjustable driver seat, rear center armrest and a rear reading lamp.

Over and above the goodies of Active and Ambition, the Elegance (the top variant) will have 15 inch alloys wheels, electrically adjustable door mirrors, dual front airbags, CD-MP3 player, front and rear speakers, automatic AC and an on board computer.

Due to the lack of many features on the base model, we believe that the Rapid will be very competitively priced against the rivals. We definitely know that that it will sit below its blood sister VW Vento. Considering the VW Vento was launched at Rs 6.99 lakhs, expect the Rapid to start with Rs 6.5 lakhs (ex Delhi).

  1. i hope it act as booster for skoda sales

  2. DRG says:

I agree with Morr. with regard to feature and price. Also given the dealer experience with Skoda, it need more time to pickup.

In my opinion, Skoda diesel has more torque (Having driven the vento I am drawing a straight comparison) and is linear than the dci. Despite the service experience of skoda, they have more dealers which Nissan has to build.

Skoda should also advertise on the indianized features – or bank on the statement built for India and explain those feature list. Should publish (as they did for fabia) the spares cost and talk about reduced service cost.

    1. The Rapid, with sensible pricing, could mark the comeback of the brand in India. The Laura and Superb are mountain lions, but they are not volume models. Skoda has also spoken out on the CitiGo’s chances in India. The Rapid is their short-term volumes vehicle.

  3. C. Morr says:

Considering the fact that the base model has fewer features than Nissan Sunny, which has ABS/EBD/BA and driver airbag in its base model,it should price the base model below Nissan Sunny XE. Rs 5.5 lakh is a good starting point. At 6.5 it might appear competitive with regard to Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Ford Fiesta. But we should not forget that the featurs in Skoda Rapid’s base model is nowhere near that of its competitors.

    1. Yeah, if they price it well, many will upgrade to it. I thought they lost the opportunity to use the Octavia nameplate, it enjoyed the image of a budget limousine in India.

      1. C. Morr says:

Yes. Octavia sounds much better than Rapid. Maybe they dug up the ‘Rapid’ handle because of the success of Suzuki Swift. Swift = Rapid.

They say sooner or later your passion finds you. Sometime in late 2009, I started writing for IAB and ever since then it has been a roller coaster ride for me. An amazing experience that has taught me a lot, taken me to new places, driven some great cars and met some amazing people. When you don't find me on IAB (very rarely), you will find me either at a coffee shop or an eatery or at the nearest gadget store.Hope you enjoy IAB as much as we do!
