Japanese car manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda have always developed individual cars for the specific markets. So their popular models such as Camry and Civic are customized according to certain market requirements.

Although, these cars will have the same badge and more or less the same components, externally they will be completely different cars to look at. Hyundai has taken the same route with the new Sonata in Europe.

American Toyota Camry

The American Toyota Camry looks aggressive

A few days ago, Toyota America presented the 2012 Camry for the American markets. It did not create much hue and cry because the car was already revealed through many spyshots, spy videos and actual pictures published in auto magazines across the globe. The American version of the Camry takes a sporty stance and looks very aggressive.

In Uncle Sam’s land, the Camry is a car that is driven by owners and not a chauffeur driven one. So Toyota America is trying to target the youth markets by presenting a sporty sedan. The design somewhat reminds us of the old civic.

The American Camry is powered by a 2.5-liter four pot petrol motor that produces 180 PS/230 Nm and a 3.5-liter V6 petrol generates 272 PS/336 Nm. It has all the bells and whistles such as Bluetooth/USB connectivity, 6.1 inch infotainment system, reverse guide camera, GPS Navigation and a powerful JBL audio system

Global Toyota Camry is conservative

Now Toyota Ukraine has released the images of what some blogs refer to as the “Global version of the Camry” which is considerable different from the American one in terms of exterior design. Instead of the sporty aggressive image, the Global version of the Camry features traits of a conservative family sedan. In fact, the styling is very much inspired by the Lexus LS 600 with the wide chrome grill and swept back headlamps.

The press release harps on the fact that the leg space for rear passengers has been optimized which implies that this car can be a chauffeur driven one. The engine options and the level of kit available on the Global one is exactly the same as the American.

The interiors of the Global Camry get a wooden finish on the dashboard. On the other hand, the American one is beige plastic. Apart from that, the steering wheel, the arrangement of buttons and knobs is pretty much the same.

So really, it is just a matter of exterior design. Our simple question is which one do you prefer – The American Camry or The Global Camry?

global one looks much much better

Most Camry buyers are 30+ if not 40ish. Personally, I think for me its the Global one for subtle presence. Not many 40+ buy Cruze for it being very butch…

Having said that, both Toyota and Honda sell their American version models in Thailand first and then followed in India. So no bets there – we will get the American model if that is sold in Thailand. I think the export RHD Camry is made in Toyota’s Altona (Melbourne) plant for export to Thailand and India??

CBU would mean expensive and with the new Sonata just round the corner there is going to be some tough competition there. So Toyota should start the CKD route for Camry for India and sell at 18lacs ex-showroom for base model. People who will buy Camry may not look at the fuel bill so Petrol is ok for now.

Pamper the Americans first…give the second-best to the rest of the world. That appears to be the motto of some carmakers. No surprise here that the American model looks better.
