Going through Ford’s history, nothing like what they are going to do has been done before. The American auto maker plans to launch an assualt in the sub-compact hatchback segment of developing markets, not by creating something from scratch, but by using a phased-out base.
Ford’s new small car, developed in 19 months, is codenamed B 517 and the automaker’s first ever hatchback in India. Not only will it be manufactured and sold here, it will be shipped to Europe, South Africa and Australia. Its highlight – usage of a phased out Ford Fiesta platform.
Ford’s small car will be the first of many vehicles to will be sold all over the world. Take Ford’s line-up in any country, in the middle of the next decade, you could see the same line-up of cars sold in India or any other country. The small car marks the beginning of Ford’s global standardization strategy.
Ford’s new small car will compete with Peugeot 206 and Renault Clio, two cars that could also make it to India in the future.
A 1.4 TDCi engine delivering 68hp could be used on the new car. A 1.2-liter petrol engine would also be available from the start.
Ford’s new small car will be unveiled during the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

The car may be good but the pricing is key. Need to see how it is segmented – mid priced or luxury hatchback.
@Sushil – I remember reading its pricing would be similar to the Santro. The base model is said to be in that range, could be around the 3 lakh mark.
