More details have emerged about the next gen Hyundai Sonata which will be called the i40. The new mid-sized saloon and estate will go on sale in Europe in 2010, replacing the ageing Sonata. According to a Hyundai insider, the i40 will major on style, “and won’t be a car that people buy purely for value.” This can clearly be inferred from the looks of the concept car.
Billed as a competitor to the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and the Skoda Laura , the Hyundai i40 will initially be launched in estate form first, with a saloon version following in 2011. Many of the styling cues seen on the Hyundai Genus concept from the 2006 Geneva show could make it to production on the i40.
The i40 is believed to be based on an all-new platform which will underpin other future Hyundais and Kias, with the newly unveiled 181bhp 2.0-litre CRDi diesel engine being the most popular powerplant. Other powerplants will include modified versions of the i30’s current 1.6-litre diesel and petrol units, as well as a 2.0-litre petrol engine.A smaller 2.0 petrol will help in improving economy and expect the Sonata to arrive with both diesel engines when it reaches India soon after its International launch.
