In Italy, Chevrolet has unveiled the LPG-powered Matiz (Spark) which comes with a choice of two engine options-the 4-cylinder of 995 cc 65 hp engine which is available in India, and the 3-cylinder 796 cc 51 hp, which was used on the Daewoo version in India. This move is to cash in on the demand for LPG-powered small cars which has recently risen to new heights in parts Europe.
The car comes fully loaded with airbags for driver and front passenger, seat belts 3-point (pre-limiter and electric power) and head restraints for all 5 seats; bumper and the steering column to absorb shock, Padding to protect the knees, ISOFIX child seats for children and electronic anti-lock braking of the wheels (ABS) with four distribution channels and EBD. But expect most of these safety features only as options or probably they might not be offered at all.
IAB Comment- GM is desperate to flood Indian cities with the Spark and that's been the theory behind the substantial price reductions it has been offering all this while. GM is also working on a 800 cc version of the Spark, which will lessen its price by a few thousands. Recently, Hyundai came out with the Santro Eco which used LPG and the Indica LPG was also launched a few months ago by Tata Motors. So, that is a good-enough reason why Chevrolet will launch the Spark Eco Logic, especially the 796 cc version, here in India.
