Last weekend, IAB presented the first spy shots of the 2019 Maruti Wagon R. Using all the details available, our artist Shoeb Kalania has penned an immaculate rendering to give the most precise view yet of the upcoming model.

2019 Maruti Wagon R Profile Rendering
The 2019 Maruti Wagon R isn't nearly as stylish as the JDM-spec or radically different from the outgoing model.

Currently, the Maruti Wagon R is about maximum practicality at economical prices, with design and styling not playing defining roles. However, the Kei car-inspired entry-level model is looking to change things a bit with the lifecycle makeover.

Like the outgoing model, the new generation has a short hood, large windscreen, large windows, noticeably short rear overhangs and tiny wheels pushed out for achieving maximum usable space. The thin black garnish on the C-pillar is an interesting touch, purposed to give a floating-roof look.

At the front, 2019 Maruti Wagon R has a shorter bonnet, new headlamps and a new grille. At the rear, the redesigned vertical tail lamps stretch out slightly to the sides. The new tail lamps are somewhat reminiscent of the 2018 Maruti Ertiga. Inside, one can expect a several new comfort and convenience features, including a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity.

The new generation model rides on an upgraded version of the outgoing model’s platform, and not the Heartect as in Japan because that would shoot up the price. The 1.0-litre petrol and petrol-CNG engines should continue, with minor performance and efficiency refinements. A pure electric variant should follow in 2020, becoming the company's first EV in the country.

Maruti Suzuki has started a promotional campaign for the Wagon R with videos in the same way Hyundai did for its all-new Santro, reminding customers of the car’s history and the emotions attached to it. Expect pre-orders to open after the new year and the market launch in the first quarter of 2019.
