The latest motorcycle from Royal Enfield’s stable to get the ABS upgrade is the Thunderbird 500X. The bike has been launched in India at INR 2.13 lakh*.

The standard model is sold at INR 1.98 lakh* and should be available until the stock lasts or April 2019 when the new safety norms come into effect – whichever comes first. Earlier this month, Royal Enfield had introduced the ABS version of the Thunderbird 350X in India at INR 1.54 lakh*.

Similar to other Royal Enfields, the ABS installed on the Thunderbird 500X is a dual-channel unit, and the upgrade has resulted in a price increase (ex-showroom) of approximately INR 15,000.

The Thunderbird X range brings a youthful character and the story of self-expression to the Thunderbird range. The X badge model was launched as a bold new ‘twist’ to the Thunderbird brand. The colours of the tank are coordinated with elements like the stitching on the seat and rim-tapes on the wheels. The Thunderbird 500X is available in two colour options - Getaway Orange and Drifter Blue.

The motorcycle features revised ergonomics that are achieved with a new, flat style handlebar. The fuel tank gets bright colour options while the ‘gunslinger’ styled seat, grab-rail and shortened rear mudguard give the motorcycle a custom style statement. Chrome bits are minimal on the bike. Thus, the chrome treated parts include headlight ring and the fuel filler cap.

Blacked-out components on the motorcycle include the exhaust, side covers, headlamp cover, indicators housing and the grab-rail. The Thunderbird X is the first Royal Enfield to come with alloy wheels and tubeless tyres from the factory.

The X badge version draws 27.2 bhp of power at 5,250 rpm and 41.3 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm from its 499cc, single cylinder, air cooled engine. The motor is paired with a five-speed gearbox. Stopping power comes from a single disc at the front and rear while the addition of ABS further enhances the safety net.
