Like the Mercedes EQC, the next-gen Mercedes GLS will login to the first markets in mid-2019, Daimler has confirmed in its product roadmap. The world premiere is expected to finish at the 2019 North American International Auto Show that will run from January 14-27, 2019.

The next-gen Mercedes GLS will have an ultra-luxurious Maybach variant.

In its third generation, the Mercedes GLS is expected to feature a design inspired by the new generation Mercedes GLE. That said, the full-size SUV will remain as boxy. Reports say that three different seating layouts are planned for the third generation: 4-seat, 6-seat and 7-seat. The 4-seat layout (with reclining rear seats) is for the top of the line Maybach variant that was previewed by the polarising Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury in April.

The next-gen Mercedes GLS will share the new MHA (Modular High Architecture) platform with the latest Mercedes GLE, and that should translate to a kerb weight lower than the outgoing model. Unlike its predecessor, it won’t come with V6 engines. Instead, new straight-six motors are planned which should include the M 256 unit that features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

V8 engine options are a given, for the standard variant as well as the high-performance AMG variants and the ultra-luxurious Maybach variant, both of which will follow perhaps in 2020. A petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain that offers a pure electric range of around 50 km is also planned.

The three-pointed star’s redesigned Range Rover rival will download semi-autonomous driving technologies from its flagship saloon, which was its first car to feature the Distronic Active Proximity Control and Active Steer Assist systems.
