Yamaha has unveiled its new 125 cc scooter, the FreeGo at the 2018 Indonesia Motorcycle Show. The vehicle is feature packed, and the standout aspect is its massive 25-litre under seat storage that should accommodate a full-face helmet, handbag or similar items comfortably. For reference, the storage capacity on the FreeGo is more than the Yamaha NMAX maxi-scooter.

The scooter gets two variants – FreeGo standard and the premium FreeGo S. Up front, the FreeGo gets an apron mounted full-LED headlight – a feature that is becoming more common with new launches. The scooter also gets Hazard lamps that can be used in case of an emergency. The front blinkers are neatly integrated on either side of the front apron, close to the front fender.

The cockpit is equipped with a fully digital 'Multi-Information Display' (MID) which contains ride related information. There is also an electric socket on-board to charge your devices. The FreeGo comes with a Smart Key System (SKS), a keyless access function that features Immobilizer and Answer Back System. The SKS is only available on the premium version (FreeGo S) of the scooter.

The 895mm long seat and a spacious flat footboard are aimed to offer more comfort to the rider and the pillion. Convenience features include a Smart Front Refuel. The filler cap is placed behind the front apron instead of under the seat. The fuel tank capacity stands at 4.2-litre which may not sound a lot. But Yamaha has integrated features to ensure better fuel economy and lesser fuel stops.

The scooter gets a Stop & Start System (SSS) to ensure better fuel economy. A similar feature is seen on Hero MotoCorp products as i3S technology. The system automatically turns off the engine when the scooter stops for more than five seconds. The motor starts again as soon as the throttle is activated.

The 125 cc Blue Core engine comes with Smart Motor Generator (SMG) that is aimed to deliver smoother acceleration and start-up. Forged Piston & Diasil Cylinder technology help in the longevity of the motor. The 125 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, SOHC, fuel-injected engine is tuned to deliver 9.5 PS of maximum power at 8,000 rpm and 9.5 Nm of peak torque at 5,500 rpm.

Stopping power comes from a single disc at the front and a drum unit at the rear. Safety net on the FreeGo includes Antilock Brake System (ABS) that is available as an option. The scooter rides on 12-inch wheels that are wrapped in 100/90 - 12M / C 59J – tubeless tyre at the front and 110 / 90-12M / C 64L – tubeless unit at the rear.

Standard FreeGo is available in Matte Black, Metallic Red, Metallic Blue and Metallic White. FreeGo S and S-ABS come in two colours, Matte Red and Matte Gray colour options. The scooter has been priced at Rp. 18,500,000 (INR 89,962) for the standard model, Rp.19,700,000 (INR 95,797) for FreeGo S, and Rp.22,500,000 (INR 1,09,413) for FreeGo S ABS version - all prices are OTR, Jakarta.
