With rumours around the discontinuation of the Nano (and Nano AMT) getting louder, the Tiago AMT is set to become Tata Motors's most pocket-friendly automatic offering.

Introduced in April 2016, the Tiago was initially an MT-only model. Just a month before the car completed one year in the market, Tata Motors introduced an AMT option for a comfortable and stress-free driving experience. Initially, the choice was exclusively available in a fully-loaded 'XZA' grade, but a couple of months down the line, an 'XTA' grade with a much lower price followed.

Speaking to journalists at the Tiago NRG's launch this week, Tata Motors (PV unit) President Mayank Pareek talked about briefly about the market response of the company's AMT offerings. "We are doing good on AMT," he said. Specifically, about the Maruti Celerio AGS rival, he said, "In Tiago, we have AMT 25% (share)."

The Tiago AMT uses a 5-speed transmission with four gear positions (Automatic, Neutral, Reverse and Manual). It features two drive modes - Sports (first-in-class) and City. A 'creep' function makes manoeuvrability in heavy traffic and during parking more manageable, and it prevents the car from rolling back when it starts from an inclined position.

The Tiago carline itself has received huge success in India. Last fiscal, it made it to India's top 10 selling car list by registering 78,829 units. With the launch of the NRG variant, Tata Motors expects monthly sales of its bestseller to reach 10,000 units.

"Last month we sold 9,300 (units) of Tiago, around that. This additional (variant: NRG) gets us some additional customers," said Pareek.
