Test drives of pre-production prototypes of the VW T-Cross were conducted recently for international media. The brief shared here by ThomasGeigerCar details key aspects of the T-Cross. The smallest member of Volkswagen's SUV lineup will arrive towards the end of 2018.

Volkswagen claims that the T-Cross will have the roomiest interior and largest boot space amongst rivals. There's a sliding rear seat that allows for fore and aft adjustment of 15 cm leading to a variable boot space of 385-455 L with the rear seat up. Folded flat, the VW T-Cross can swallow up to 1,281 L of cargo.

The VW T-Cross is based on the MQB A0 platform that underpins the sixth generation Polo. The European-spec model is 4.10 m long. The reviewer adds that the T-Cross for China will be longer. There will be two petrol engines available - 1.0 L TSI with 95 hp or 115 hp and 1.5 L TSI with 150 hp. Diesel variant will use a 1.6 L TDI with 115 hp. There will be no AWD offered. The video does not mention the transmission choices. However, expect VW to offer 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, or 7-speed DSG gearboxes depending on the variant.

In driving experience, the VW T-Cross feels a lot like the VW Polo. The significant difference is the increased ride height. Like the Polo, the T-Cross will also come with an optional digital cockpit with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and Active Info Display. Four USB ports and wireless charging will be available as well. A 300 watt Beats sound system with subwoofer will be offered in one of the trims. Driver assistance features like Front Assist ambient traffic monitoring system and Lane Assist lane departure warning system will be available on board the VW T-Cross.

Volkswagen will offer the T-Cross in 12 exterior colours. The three seen in images here are - Black Uni, Energetic Orange, and Makena Turquoise. There will be dual-tone paint options to choose from and a variety of rim sizes up to 18-inch.

Volkswagen will unveil the T-Cross this autumn. Following its launch in the European market, the VW T-Cross will reach China and South America as well. The T-Cross is unlikely to be launched in India. However, it could inspire a VW SUV that is likely to be one of the two MQB A0 IN-based products the company plans to launch 2021 onwards.
