Although we hoped that the BMW X2's debut would take place at IAA 2017 in Frankfurt, BMW instead unveiled a slew of new concepts. However, that has not stopped them from teasing the pre-production model with a colourful 'Digital' camouflage wrap. This is our best look at the production-spec Range Rover Evoque rival.

The styling is a watered-down version of the Concept X2 we saw at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Patent sketches that surfaced in July revealed the final exterior design digitally, which looks BMW design unmistakably. There are a few exclusive touches, such as inverted kidney grilles, new ‘hoffmeister’ kink styling, and the BMW roundel logo on both C-pillars.

The X2 also has a rising waistline, small rear windows and raked windscreen, so we are assuming that the rear visibility will be limited. As for the interior, the styling could be derived from the BMW X1’s interior, but with funkier trim and materials. Practicality will not be as strong as the X1, but the X2 banks on style and presence to lure urban customers.

The X2 will also share the FWD UKL1 platform with the BMW X1. The engine lineup is expected to include a range the three-cylinder and four-cylinder TwinPower motors displacing 1.5L and 2.0L, respectively. The range-topping X2 M35i will pack a 2.0L turbo engine that makes 296 bhp. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and an 8-speed automatic, while BMW’s X-Drive AWD system will be equipped in select variants.
