Back in 2014, less than two years after the VW Golf Mk7 was introduced, reports said that the VW Golf Mk8 will arrive in 2017. The Golf Mk7 model received a facelift last November signifying that Volkswagen was some time away from showing the new model. According to a report from Auto Express, the next-gen VW Golf is still over two years away.

The VW Golf is the Volkswagen's best-selling model globally. So, the company will take its time in perfecting the next-gen recipe before bringing it to the market. Its development is at an advanced stage now, though, Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman, Volkswagen brand, has confirmed.

Speaking to the British publication, Dr. Diess said:

The priority is Golf because in the next generation it will be our main core product; and that’s where the focus goes. Public attention, press and our communications have been a lot on the electric cars because we believe in it. But I’m convinced it (VW Golf) will remain our core product in the next generation.

The VW Golf will retain the well-accepted proportions of the current model moving to the eighth generation. Auto Express' renderings suggest the eighth-gen model will feature a sharper front and rear. At the front, sleeker LED headlamps and lower bonnet will level up the aggression. At the rear, the "GOLF" lettering will move from below the tail lamps to below the brand's logo, in a way similar to the VW Arteon. On the inside, the next-gen Golf will have substantial changes. Volkswagen will replace majority of the physical buttons with digital controls. The second-gen Active Info Display should make it to the car.

The next-gen VW Golf will ride on the MQB platform. It would have an string of conventional petrol and diesel engine options, including a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a new 2.0-litre diesel engine, as well as a new 1.5-litre diesel engine. The latter will replace the current model's 1.6-litre TDI engine.

Volkswagen will offer 48-volt mild-hybrid system in select configurations for improved efficiency. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol-powered GTI variant will also benefit from this technology. The range will include an all-new Golf R too. The Golf GTE plug-in hybrid will also continue through the next generation. The zero-emissions e-Golf won't return, making way for an all-new EV from the I.D. family.
