IAB reader spots the Lamborghini Urus up close in Germany

Nearly five years after its debut in concept form in 2012, the production Lamborghini Urus started testing. IAB reader Andreas Lehr has this week shared spy shots of a production Lamborghini Urus captured in Germany, giving one of the clearest looks yet at the SUV. The Lamborghini Urus will debut on 4 December.

Lamborghini will offer the Urus with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine at launch.

The Lamborghini Urus stays close to the concept version. The rising beltline, sloping roofline, muscular wheel arches, large wheels and flattish back glass give a very dynamic look to the crossover. Underpinning the exotic Italian SUV is the Volkswagen Group’s MLB-Evo platform shared with the Bentley Bentayga and Audi models, including the Q7.

Lamborghini will offer the Urus with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine at launch. The first turbocharged engine for the company will develop 650 hp in this SUV. Neither the Urus nor any other Lamborghini will have a diesel engine option, as it is not in the DNA of the brand. A plug-in hybrid option – also a Lamborghini-first, will follow a year after launch.

Lamborghini will produce the Urus, which it proudly calls “the first super sport utility vehicle in the world”, alongside the Lamborghini Huracan and Lamborghini Aventador S at its Sant’Agata Bolognese plant in Italy. The European launch will take place in Q2 2018 (April-June 2018). The company plans to manufacture 1,000 units of the coupe SUV next year. If the demand is higher, this figure will increase to 3,500 units in 2019.

The Lamborghini Urus won’t have a diesel engine option. Those looking for a more frugal option will have to wait for the plug-in hybrid variant following in 2019.

USA, China, Middle East, UK, Germany and Russia are the key world markets for the Urus. Pavan Shetty, ex-Lamborghini India Head, had hinted in 2015 that India would also get the Urus.
