Festival season launch for the Duster-based crossover.

The Renault Captur that was introduced as the Renault Kaptur in Russia last year has been spied in India yet again. Cartoq reader Harshanth Mani spotted two test mules of the upcoming compact SUV parked at a spot in Ooty, Tamil Nadu recently.

The Indian-spec Renault Captur rides on the Duster’s B0/Logan platform.

The Renault Captur measures 4,333 mm in length, 1,813 mm in width (excluding mirrors), and 1,613 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,673 mm and a ground clearance of 204 mm. The 387 litres of luggage space, on folding the rear seats, increases to 1,200 litres.

The for-India Captur is larger than the Euro-spec Captur, and it sits on the Duster’s B0/Logan low-cost platform, not the Clio’s B-platform. In essence, this model is made especially for emerging markets.

The Renault Captur is expected in India with the 1.6-litre SCe four-cylinder petrol engine and the 1.5-litre dCi four-cylinder diesel engine. Both test mules were equipped with a diesel engine. The Russian-spec version comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed manual transmission, a 4-speed automatic transmission and a continuously variable transmission. A four-wheel drive system will likely be available on the India-spec model.

The Renault Captur will be manufactured in India with over 80% localisation in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu. The features to be offered in the Indian-spec version are yet to be known, but a few can be made out from the spy shots.

One of the test mules was equipped with projector headlamps and steel wheels, while the other one had LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, leather seats and touchscreen infotainment system. The Renault Captur will launch in India in Q3 2017.

As for its positioning vis a vis Duster, we feel the prices of the two models will overlap to some extent, as the next-gen Duster, due in 2018, is moving up the size class, reportedly offering a 7-seat variant.
