KTM to assemble CKD parts from India in Philippines.
KTM had announced in April 2016 that they will commence assembly of four motorcycles in Philippines. Half of the production will be for local consumption while the rest will be exported to Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and China. KTM Philippines' COO Dennis Santos has now confirmed to TopGear PH that the new facility will begin trial production in January 2017.
Initially, KTM will be assembling the KTM Duke 200, KTM RC 200, KTM Duke 390 and KTM RC 390 in the Philippines. The share for the local market, to begin with, will be around 3,000 to 5,000 units per year. The formal inauguration of the plant will take place in May 2017. KTM at present has 21 operational dealers in the Philippines, and is expected to rise to 25 by the end of Q1 2017.
Filipino media has earlier suggested that the alliance between KTM and Ayala group, KTM’s partner in Philippines, will not be limited to manufacturing but will also involve co-development of motorcycles for the global market. The price list for models set for CKD manufacturing in the Philippines are as follows:
- KTM Duke 200: PHP 169,000
- KTM RC 200: PHP 199,000
- KTM Duke 390: PHP 299,000
- KTM RC 390: PHP 360,000
There is no indication whether prices will come down once local assembly commences. When fully operational, the plant will have an annual capacity of 20,000 units.
