2017 Hyundai Verna, Hyundai Tucson to feature soft-hybrid tech for India - Report

To be introduced in the Hyundai Verna next year, reportedly.

According to ET Auto, Hyundai will introduce a mild-hybrid feature in the Hyundai Verna in 2017. The Korean manufacturer is also looking to offer such a feature in the 2016 Hyundai Tucson scheduled for launch in October-November.

The mild-hybrid system could incorporate features like start/stop system, brake energy recuperation, and torque assist.

Details on the hybrid system are less, but it could incorporate features like start/stop system, brake energy recuperation and torque assist. It's unclear if the system will make it into bigger products like the 2016 Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Creta.

Given the tax benefits, exemption from Delhi's Odd-Even scheme and increasing concerns on air quality in major cities, top manufacturers in India are looking to equip their respective products with a mild-hybrid system so as to increase its appeal among prospective customers.

The only sedan in the segment to offer a mild-hybrid option is the Maruti Ciaz diesel variant, featuring Suzuki's SHVS mild-hybrid system that has helped increase its fuel efficiency to segment-leading levels. Along with Hyundai, VW is also mulling over offering a mild-hybrid variant of the Vento in the near future, reportedly.
