All new 5er will be unveiled at the 2016 North American International Motor Show.
The current, sixth generation BMW 5 Series was introduced in 2009 and is nearing its end of life-cycle now. It will go out of production in October, making way for the seventh generation BMW 5 Series set to debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show. According to a report from BMW Blog, the 2017 BMW 5 Series will use the same front axle as the next-gen BMW 3 Series.
The seventh generation BMW 5 Series will be underpinned by the sixth generation BMW 7 Series's CLAR (CLuster ARchitecture) rear-wheel drive platform. Using this platform will allow engineers to use more lightweight materials as well as share the same front axle as the seventh generation BMW 3 Series.
The low-end models, 2017 BMW 520i and 2017 BMW 520d would weigh just marginally over the BMW 320i and BMW 320d. The higher-end models BMW 540d and BMW M550i on the other hand, will have the same axle as the sixth generation BMW 7 Series.

The top-end models BMW 540d and BMW M550i will be available with Dynamic Drive active suspension control system optionally, along with new Adaptive drive mode - a first for the BMW 5 Series. Using active stabilizers on the front and rear axles, the Dynamic Drive system counteracts the vehicle's tendency to roll in a corner.
