Engine to be sourced from the Renault Kwid 1L variant.

Datsun is mulling over replacing the current 1.2L three cylinder petrol engine in the GO hatchback with the 1.0L three cylinder engine from the Renault Kwid SCe (which will launch this year), reports Autocar India.

Since the kerb weight is merely 788 kg, the 1.0L three cylinder engine in the GO may not feel underpowered.

The 1.2L petrol engine produces 68 hp and 104 Nm of torque, while the 1.0L unit is rumored to produce around 65 hp in the Renault Kwid. The idea to introduce the 1.0L unit in the Datsun GO comes from the fact that the 1.2L unit is an expensive engine to equip, with parts imported from other countries.

Not only is the 1.0L engine lighter and more compact, but it is also heavily localized in the Indian market, which can enable Datsun to price the GO even lower than its current starting price of INR 3,25,726 (ex-showroom Delhi). Since the kerb weight is merely 788 kg, the 1.0L three cylinder engine may not feel underpowered as well.

Given that the engine was developed exclusively for cars underpinned by the CMF-A platform, Datsun will have to make certain changes to install the 1.0L three cylinder engine in the Datsun GO.
