Mahindra has successfully launched the Scorpio and XUV500 with a downsized 1.99L diesel engine in NCR.

He was quoted saying:

Despite being a diesel player, we had a feeling that a diesel-only approach may not be good enough. Now, we will launch the Scorpio and XUV500 in petrol this year and in future all vehicles will have both options.

This is not surprising, as rumors of the Mahindra Scorpio and XUV500 offering a petrol option in India have been circulating for a while now, and picked up steam when the Supreme Court announced the ban on diesel-powered vehicles displacing over 2,000 cc in the Delhi NCR region.

Currently, their only petrol-powered option is the Mahindra KUV100, offering an all new 1.2L G80 mFalcon petrol engine.

Recent reports from earlier this year have stated that Mahindra is investing INR 1,000 crore in the development of petrol engines over two to three year period for its product range. The new petrol engines are rumored to displace 1.5L, 1.6L and 2.2L, of which the lattermost engine will be co-developed with SsangYong Motor Company (SMC).
