Familiarity is one of the key reasons for its success.

In an interview with Autocar India, Vinay Pant, GM (Marketing), Maruti Suzuki India Limited has teased that the next generation Maruti Alto will feature an evolutionary yet slightly distinctive design.

According to Mr Pant, the familiarity of the Alto's design is one of the key reasons for its success in the Indian market. Since it was first introduced in 2000, the Maruti Alto has relied on its affordability and familiarity, thus keeping the formula intact.

Now, three million units later, the Maruti Alto retains the basic design lines and proportions, but with more contemporary design elements. However, to rival the Renault Kwid and Hyundai Eon, Maruti could introduce a design that will feature more distinctive touches to attract new buyers, but maintain its familiarity.

No other details on the next generation exist as of now. There are 15 new products planned for India by 2020, which are mainly spread over three key platforms and entail an investment of $1 billion. It's likely that the next generation Maruti Alto is one of them, as well as an A-Segment crossover.
