The models that were imported to India for testing are powered by the 2.0-liter MultiJet II diesel engine. A 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic will serve as transmission options, while an AWD system is optional in higher grades. A 1.6-liter E-Torq petrol engine could also be offered, should there be demand for petrol-powered SUVs.

FCA had initially cancelled the launch of the Jeep Renegade in India and confirmed that the models to go on sale were the WranglerGrand Cherokee and SRT Cherokee. However, given the soaring demand for compact SUVs priced between 10 - 20 Lakhs, FCA may have had a change of heart. The Renegade could serve as Jeep’s entry level premium SUV to rival top-end grades of the Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.

Another likely reason could be benchmark testing, as the Renegade is based on FCA’s Small Wide platform. This platform will underpin the slightly bigger Jeep 551 Compact SUV, which is confirmed to be manufactured and launched in India in 2017.
