The all-new BMW 8 Series has been in the rumor mill from nearly a decade, especially after the company showcased the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013. According to a report from Autocar, the BMW 8 Series nameplate will be resurrected in 2020. The 2020 launch timeline is tentative though.

The BMW 8 Series will be based on the CLAR platform.

The report says that the driveline components, Cluster Architecture (CLAR) rear-wheel drive platform, electrical system and connectivity technologies of the all-new BMW 8 Series will be closely related to those used by the sixth generation BMW 7 Series that was introduced last year. The British publication's sources say that the Mercedes S-Class Coupe rival will be built at the BMW Dingolfing Plant. This is the same plant where all previous generation BMW 7 Series were built and the new generation BMW 7 Series is being built.

The planning is still in preliminary stages. BMW is still figuring out about which body style to offer – a 4-door coupe (Gran Coupe in BMW parlance), or a 2-door coupe with a cabriolet twin. Whichever of the two BMW decides, will be seen in concept form in 2018.
