The Volvo S90 will have its public debut at 2016 NAIAS in January.
The Volvo S90 was unveiled on the 2nd of December at the Volvo Design Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. The public premiere will be held at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, but a walkaround video taken by Teknikens Varld at the media unveiling gives an early preview of the exterior and interior of the car.
The Volvo S90 is the second production model to feature the brand’s new design language penned by Thomas Ingenlath following the XC90. The front starts with the familiar Thor Hammer headlights, chrome-finished vertically stacked radiator grille with the Volvo Iron Mark in the centre, big air vents accentuated by silver blades and a sleek air dam grille flanked by fog lamps.
At the sides, the sleek greenhouse is embellished by chrome surrounds, the doors feature chrome body side moulding and large alloy wheels. At the rear, the S90 has ‘VOLVO’ lettering on the sculpted tailgate, C-shaped LED tail lights inspired by the Volvo Concept Coupe and dual tailpipe.
The Volvo S90 is the second model to be based on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) after the XC90. The new flagship saloon will come with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous drive feature that allows to hand over driving control to the car up to speeds of around 130 km/h. The car stays aligned within lane markings on the highway.
The Volvo S90 range comprises of four variants – T6 AWD, T8 AWD, D4 and D5. The T6 model features a 2.0-litre supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The T8 model features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 2.0-litre supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine good for 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque individually, and an electric motor at the rear producing 65 kW and 240 Nm of torque individually. The plug-in hybrid powertrain generates 407 hp and 640 Nm. The electric motor is powered by a 9.2 kWh battery pack mounted in the centre tunnel.
The D4 is a front-wheel drive model featuring a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit that produces 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The D5 model incorporates a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit that churns out 235 hp and 480 Nm of torque, and features AWD.
The S90 D4 will be available with a 6-speed manual transmission, and the D5, T6 and T8 models will be available with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
In USA, the entry-level model will be the T5, packing a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine for which specifications are expected to be announced during the car’s public debut in Detroit next month. This engine may be offered other global markets as well.
The Volvo S90 is expected to go on sale in first markets in H1 2016.
