Range

The fifth generation Mercedes E-Class range will initially consist of the 2016 Mercedes E-Class saloon (W213) and 2016 Mercedes E-Class Estate (S213). Their AMG variants, coupe and cabriolet versions and their AMG variants will start going on sale from 2017. Supported by spyshots, reports say that there will be a long-wheelbase E-Class Maybach version to top off the range.

Platform

The fifth generation Mercedes E-Class will share the rear-wheel drive MRA platform (Modular Rear Architecture) platform with the Mercedes C-Class and Mercedes S-Class. The new modular platform is expected to bring notable weight savings to the E-Class range. Both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive drivetrain layouts will be available.

Engine and Transmission

The 2016 Mercedes E-Class would be offered with an array of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options. The base diesel model is said to be offered with new generation four-cylinder diesel engines (codename: OM654). The higher-end models, reports say, will be offered with new six-cylinder petrol engine (codename: M256) and diesel engine (codename: OM656). A plug-in hybrid powertrain would also be offered, featuring a combination of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission would be standard across the range.

The next-gen E 63 AMG would be offered with an upgraded version of AMG's current 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, in two states of tunes.
