The replacement for the S80 mid-size executive sedan, the Volvo S90, has been spied testing again with heavy camouflage, by David Leclercq of Auto Gids. The new flagship sedan will debut early next year at the auto show either in Detroit (January), Geneva (March) or Beijing (April).
Underpinned by the company's new modular platform named SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture) which the recently launched flagship Volvo XC90 is based on, the S90 will be offered in sedan as well as station wagon (Volvo V90) body types.
The design of the S90 and V90 will be influenced by Volvo's new design language previewed by the Volvo Concept Coupe that was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and by the new XC90. This is clear from the car's Thor's Hammer LED daytime running lights, a sloped roofline concluding in a raked rear window and large C-shaped taillights mimicking the units of Volvo's recent concepts. Leaked images of the S90's scale model show it adopting dual exhaust tips with a chrome finish while the 'Volvo' lettering is slapped on to the boot lid between the taillamps.
The 2016 Volvo S90 will share the 2.0-litre Drive-E engine range from the XC90, including the T8 Twin Engine Hybrid powertrain. Thus the S90 will be available in various power packages, ranging from 190 PS to 400 PS. In the SUV, only an 8-speed automatic transmission is available, and that should be the case with the 90 series cars. The upcoming sedan is confirmed for production at the Daqing plant in China and could also be launched in the Polestar guise.
