2016 Porsche 911 Carrera (facelift) unveiled; gets turbo 3.0L engine – IAB Report

Turbocharged flat-six engine for the Carrera and Carrera S.

Porsche has finally unveiled the facelifted 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S (991.2), ahead of its debut at the 2015 IAA in Frankfurt. This is the first time in the history of the company that the lower Carrera variants gets turbocharging. Bookings in the UK have already started with deliveries set to commence by the end of this year.

The exterior has been slightly revised, featuring updated headlights with distinctive four-point DRLs, door handles inset in to the door panels without recess covers, redesigned taillights, vertical louvres for the engine cover, and centrally-placed dual exhaust tips.

The changes to the interior come in the form of a new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with online navigation. The touchscreen is a seven-inch unit and features multi-touch gesture support as well as handwriting inputs. Smartphones can be connected to the system through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, as well as support for Apple CarPlay connectivity. Porsche claims that the navigation system has been significantly improved with the integration of Google Earth and Google Streetview for the very first time.

2016 Porsche 911 Carrera facelift interior unveiled

The 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine, both getting a 20 hp  and 60 Nm bump over the outgoing models. The turbo engine in the Carrera produces 370 hp and 450 Nm, while the Carrera S outputs 420 hp and 500 Nm. These units can be coupled to a 7-speed manual or Porsche’s PDK automated manual gearbox transferring drive to the rear wheels.

The 911 Carrera with the PDK gearbox and Sport Chrono package covers 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and has a top speed of 183 mph (294.5 kmph). The Carrera S with the same setup, ups the performance even further with a time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph (307.3 kmph). The active rear axle steering – a technology taken from the 911 GT3 – comes as an option only for the Carrera S model.

The new PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) chassis – that can lower the ride height by ten millimeters – is a standard feature of every Carrera model. It improves stability during fast cornering while the new dampers enhance comfort owing to more precise response characteristic.

There are many assistance systems that can be had with the Carrera such as the automatic speed control, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Change Assist.
