S101 and TUV300 will not be confused by the customer, he says.

Close on the heels of the launch of the newest product, M&M is preparing for its next launch, the Mahindra S101, that will reportedly get the Mahindra XUV100 branding. The two products, however, will not cannibalise each other's sales if the company's executive director and president of the Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector, Dr. Pawan Goenka, is to be believed.

The chassis-based TUV300 is the company's latest offering to the highly competitive compact SUV segment.

The company, he told Autocar Professional, is conscious of the fact that it doesn't make a "one-size-fits-all" vehicle. He stressed that there are major differences between its SUV offerings and that they serve different demands in terms of needs and in terms of price points. "That's what we intend to do with the Mahindra S101," he said.

"While we have made TUV300 the rugged chassis based compact SUV, the S101 will be different. I can't imagine a customer comparing S101 with the TUV300, they are two different vehicles," remarked Dr. Goenka.

The S101, it recently emerged, will be powered by a 1.2-liter petrol engine, making it the first offering from the company to have an in-house petrol engine. The engine as such has been developed in coalition with Ssangyong engineers. The car will be a light weight raised hatchback, sporting a monocoque frame. The sub-4m vehicle is believed to be a competitor to higher variants of the Renault Kwid, and B-Segment hatchbacks Maruti Wagon R and Maruti Celerio.
