While the rear of the prototypes appear a tad shorter than the 2016 Civic sedan which was revealed this month in Los Angeles, CA, the rear door with its quarter glass window bears no similarity to the Civic Type R hatchback which is sold in Europe.

The experimental mules could be part of an early testing phase of the Civic Type R for the North American market. Honda has already confirmed the Civic Type R for the American market, and this 'notchback' version seen here could be the body style planned.

The Civic Type R for North America could continue using the 2.0-liter turbocharged VTEC engine.

The Civic Type R which is sold in Europe is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged VTEC engine capable of 310 PS at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. It is sent to the front wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. The hot-hatch takes only 5.7 seconds to hit 100 km/h and has a top-speed of 270 km/h.
