At a price of INR 3-4 lakhs, the Kwid will compete with entry-level models Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon. Its USP would be its segment-best fuel efficiency, a 7-inch touch screen, high ground clearance and the bold crossover styling seen for the first time in the segment.

Developed at the Renault Nissan Technology Business Center India (RNTBCI) located near Chennai, the Kwid is the first regional Renault model to be localized about 98 percent.

Measuring at an overall length of 3.68 meters and width of 1.58 meters, it is based on the CMF-A architecture and will be powered by a three-cylinder 0.8-liter petrol engine that reportedly puts out 57 bhp, beating the Eon's 55.2 bhp output. The launch edition will have a 5-speed transmission, but a few months in, the car will receive an AMT option as well as a 1-liter engine with higher performance. A Kwid diesel is ruled out.

Reports say that the Kwid will have low gearing for a non-sluggish driving experience, and the automated transmission will come with a rotary shifter placed on the center console, similar to the driving mode selector on the Duster.
