Volvo is currently working on the successor of the flagship S80 sedan, which is expected to be revealed by early next year and go on sale in 2016. Rumored to be called the Volvo S90, it will be the second product to ride on Volvo's new SPA platform, and its design will draw influence from the Volvo concepts unveiled in the last two years, as well as the new XC90.

Topspeed have posted an unofficial render of the Volvo S90, which gives an idea of the final design of the new flagship sedan. It will feature a long vertically-slat chrome grille flanked by LED headlamps with "Thorhammer" DRLs, and a simple exterior design. Its dimensions could be a little bigger than the S80 for better road presence and interior space.

Like the XC90, the interior will be a big step up over the outgoing S80. The interior functions will be integrated in the large Sensus infotainment display, thereby reducing button count. It is expected to be an “evolution of the XC90’s design”, as Nick Connor, Volvo UK managing director, has previously said.

The S90 will source power from a range of highly force fed 2.0-liter Drive-E engines, with power outputs ranging from 190 hp to 400 hp produced by the T8 Twin Engine Hybrid power train in the XC90. It could offer an 8-speed automatic unit as standard across the range.

It was confirmed that Volvo's new plant in Daqing, China, will rollout an "all new premium sedan", which points to the S90 being manufactured in said plant. It will also be produced at the company's main plant in Torslanda, Sweden.
