Best selling compact sedan so far.

Maruti-Suzuki has announced that the Maruti Swift Dzire crossed the 1 million sales milestone, since its introduction way back in 2008. It will now join its smaller brothers like the Alto, Wagon R and Swift in the company's "elite 10 lakh club". Note that the sales figures combine the performance of both the Maruti Dzire and the Dzire Tour (exclusive to taxi and fleet operators).

Basically a regular Swift with a boot attached, the Maruti Dzire was a resounding success among Indian families when it was launched 7 years ago. It was also a hit among taxi and fleet operators, where the first sub-4m sedan, the Tata Indigo CS, got most of its customers from.

The second generation Maruti Dzire made its debut in 2012, while a mid-cycle facelift was launched last February. Maruti is now prepping a diesel automatic version of the Dzire, which is heading for a launch in the second half of this calendar year, reportedly. It is likely to pair the company's 5-speed AMT gearbox with the 1.3-liter DDiS diesel engine, and could be as fuel efficient as the current diesel model's 26.59 km/l.
