Multiple media reports state that Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) is working on an all-new sub-4 meter SUV, to be positioned below the recently launched Creta. In a bid to dethrone India's leading car maker, Maruti Suzuki, the Korean manufacturer is keen on entering all-new segments, especially those like the UV segments which are poised for a growth phase.

The sub-4m SUV is unlikely to be based on the Creta's platform.

Details on this compact SUV are sketchy at the moment. However, to leverage economies of scale, Hyundai could use the i20 platform, or the Grand i10's platform to base this product. It is unlikely to share its underpinnings with the Creta, which is actually based on a modified version of the Elantra platform.

Also, adhering to Indian small car regulations, the sub-4 meter SUV would be powered by the 1.2-liter Dual VTVT petrol engine, and the 1.4-liter CRDi diesel engine, which also does duty on the Elite i20 and i20 Active.

On a side note, Hyundai Motor America's CEO, Mr. Dave Zuchowski, said in a recent interview that the Creta would not be introduced in the U.S.A. The executive however confirmed that Hyundai is working on a compact SUV with aggressive styling based on a front-wheel drive platform.
