The 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is built on the new Triton pickup's platform.

The all-new model, whose patent filing was leaked last month, will be based on the same ladder-frame chassis of the fifth generation Triton that arrived in November last year.

Two of the three spyshots reveal the third generation Pajero Sport's exterior from a top view. These pictures were taken during the commercial shooting for the all-new SUV. The view is not that clear but it reveals the new swept-back headlamps, squarish wheel arches, and the blacked-out B- and C-pillars.

The front fascia features the ‘Dynamic Shield’ design, which is also seen on the 2016 Outlander.

The all-new model is likely to be offered with the 2015 Triton's new 2.4-litre 4N15 turbo-diesel engine. On the pickup truck, this engine delivers 181 PS (178 hp) and 430 Nm of torque. Some of the engines that are offered on the current model, would continue serving the ladder-frame SUV.

With the new generation model, the 4-speed automatic transmission, as per reports, gets replaced with a 6-speed automatic transmission, serving alongside a 6-speed manual. Features offered currently like the 'Super Select 4WD' with rear diff lock, 8-way adjustable driver seat and 17-inch wheels, can be safely expected to migrate into the new gen.

The 2016 Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Challenger will lock horns with the new Toyota Fortuner (world debut in August), new Ford Everest/Endeavour (India-bound in 2015), and the Chevrolet Trailblazer (India-bound in 2015).

Hindustan Motor Finance Corp’s (HMFCL) Tiruvallur plant (in Tamil Nadu) assembles the Pajero Sport from Thai-made CKD kits for the Indian demand. This arrangement is set to continue for the 2016 Pajero Sport as well, when it launches in India, after February 2016.
