Here are the first spyshots of the Maruti Swift Dzire diesel AMT, which is reportedly heading for a launch in the second half of this calendar year. In a bid to capitalize on the AMT's popularity, Maruti plans on introducing this technology in more of its offerings, and the Dzire diesel, Wagon R and Ertiga are among the many models that will get this transmission.

The Zest and the Dzire are powered by the Fiat sourced 1.3-liter MultiJet diesel engine.

Seen in its top-end ZDi trim, the Dzire diesel AMT will rival the Tata Zest AMT, which is currently the only compact sedan to sport this feature. However, if Maruti decides to offer the AMT on the LDi and VDi variants of the Dzire, it will steal the title of India's most affordable diesel automatic car from the Zest, which is priced between INR 7.25 lakhs to INR 8.07 lakhs, ex-Showroom, New Delhi for the AMT variants.

The AMT in the Dzire diesel would be supplied by Magneti Marelli, which has announced a new plant inside Maruti's supplier park to make AMT modules. It will be a 5-speed unit, and based on Maruti's other AMT offerings, would not rob the compact sedan of its fuel efficiency. The Dzire diesel is presently India's most fuel efficient diesel passenger car at 26.59 km/l.

The Dzire petrol is available with a 4-speed automatic transmission on the VXi variant. However, it remains to be seen if this gearbox is ditched for the AMT, which has found favor among Indian buyers for its low-cost and inexpensive use (no dip in fuel efficiency).
