Shanghai GM has announced that the global debut of the next-generation Buick Verano sedan will be conducted on April 19 in Shanghai, and its public debut at the Auto Shanghai 2015 on April 20. The car is to be sold as “Wei Lang” in the Chinese market. Though Buick is tight-lipped on what powers the Verano in China, Auto.163.com has managed to decode engine details from the new car’s fuel consumption labels approved by government agencies.
The engines that power the second-generation sedan are the GM’s small-displacement powertrain series known as “Ecotec”. Buick offers the 1.5-liter direct-injection petrol unit in both turbocharged (1.5-T) and naturally-aspirated avatars. The turbocharged variant develops 158.58 hp and is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The naturally-aspirated unit generates maximum output of 112.64 hp and peak torque of 146 Nm, mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. This is already offered in the Chevrolet Cruze sedan sold in China.
Info on the size of the car has also been snooped. The new car measures 4718 mm in length, 1802 mm in breath, and 1466 mm in height (while the 1.5-T variant is 1471mm tall), with a wheelbase of 2700 mm. The new Verano shares GM’s ‘Delta II’ platform that underpins the Buick Excelle GT and Chevrolet Cruze in China.
Buick says that the new Verano gains design cues from the Buick Riviera concept unveiled at the previous Shanghai Auto show in 2013 and the Avenir concept, which debuted at the North American International Auto Show early this year. The official teaser of the sedan reveals its dual-waist line design with two creases down its side body. A spyshot gives away its panoramic sunroof and chrome-rich body detailing.
The spy images of the car’s interiors by Auto.163.com show the dominance of Buick’s new family design. More details about the car is to be announced at the premiere.
